Why We Compete

Why We Compete

April 27, 2024

When we're really super honest with ourselves, we realize that any form of competition is rarely an attempt to be better than someone else. We're competing to feel better about ourselves; to prove we are worthy, lovable, smart or whatever the uncertainty is that lives inside us. But the win cannot, and will never, give us what we truly seek.

Many moons ago, I found this out in a most punishing way when I competed for the very last time - won - yet the prize wasn't worth the winning, for it never filled the barren hollows within me. That was something I needed to do for myself.

That experience helped me understand what's really going on whenever I feel compelled to compete, or anytime I notice someone trying to one-up someone else.

Insecurity.

Competing is a sign that we're comparing ourselves with others and seeking value externally.
When we're secure within ourselves, rivalry will no longer be of any interest.

Being at peace with who we are. There's a whole lotta freedom in that!
