When we're really super honest with ourselves, we realize that any form of competition is rarely an attempt to be better than someone else. We're competing to feel better about ourselves; to prove we are worthy, lovable, smart or whatever the uncertainty is that lives inside us. But the win cannot, and never will, give us what we truly seek.
Many moons ago, I found this out in a most punishing way when I competed for the very last time - won - yet the prize wasn't worth the winning, for it never filled the barren hollows within me. That was something I needed to do for myself.
That experience helped me see what was really going on whenever I felt compelled to compete or anytime I noticed someone trying to one-up someone else.
Insecurity.
A signal we're comparing ourselves with others and seeking value outside ourselves.
When we're secure within ourselves, rivalry will no longer be of interest.
Just be youself. There's a whole lotta freedom in that!
