One of the most compassionate things we can do for others is stop trying to rescue them. Instead, let them make their own decisions and allow them to fully experience the consequences of those choices.
Just like toddlers learning to walk, we know falling down is part of the process. How will they ever master walking if we keep scooping them up and carrying them in an attempt to keep them safe? This interferes with their natural growth process.
By using this same precept with everyone in our lives, we are showing them that we believe in them; that we honor their free-will; that we encourage their own self-reliance, knowing that each stumble they endure is simply moving them closer to their own mastery.
