The Symbology Of White Feathers

The Symbology Of White Feathers

January 26, 2020

White feathers show up in my world ALL THE TIME and sometimes in the most bazaar places ever! For instance, one time on a hot July afternoon, a feather was stuck to the door handle of my car. Another time entwined in the screen of my front door when I arrived home. And once while I was working out at the gym, resting between reps at the shoulder press machine, I watched as a large, white, billowy feather breezed, twirling several yards, across the floor before stopping at my feet. I even came upon a bright pink one (my favorite color) while hiking on my birthday a few years back.

It seems that feathers are a powerful symbol in many different cultures, depicting various meanings. Perhaps a loved one who has passed is sending a message that they are near. Some believe that finding a white feather is a sign that they are on the right path in life, while others believe they represent rebirth, new beginnings, peace, protection and reassurance that everything is going to be alright. Did you know that long ago, people placed feathers under the pillow of an ill loved one in order to speed recovery? And I just read that feathers used to be placed in doorways of homes to keep unwanted visitors from entering.

Well last night, a fluffy, white plume popped up in perhaps the most peculiar place thus far! While I was folding my laundry it was interlaced deep into the armpit fabric of one of my shirts and I have no idea where it came from. Am I molting? 😂

Throughout the years, I have made a practice of saving all these feathery friends that cross my path (in a vase by my front door no less!) and I like to think of them as little angelic messengers. Perhaps they show up as a gentle reminder to lighten up, flow more freely and remember that we are always supported and surrounded by love.
