Castor Oil Has Made A Comeback

March 2, 2025

As far back as the Ancient Egyptian era, castor oil has been renowned all over the world for its medicinal and therapeutic properties. Recently, it seems to have recaptured attention for its vast health and beauty benefits. Castor oil is a thick, pale yellow oil, with a mild nutty scent that is high in antioxidants, antimicrobial compounds, fatty acids like omega-6, and its most active component - ricinoleic acid, which is an unsaturated omega-9 fatty acid, derived from the seeds of the castor plant (Ricinus communis).

Most of us have probably heard our grandmothers mention the laxative properties of castor oil for naturally relieving constipation, but it has an abundance of other amazing benefits, as well.

Some Simple Ways To Use Castor Oil

Castor Oil Packs - Castor oil packs can reduce inflammation, improve circulation, provide pain relief and due to its penetrating effect, can even help with internal issues, such as breaking up fibroids in the uterus. To make a castor oil pack, soak a piece of wool or cotton flannel in organic castor oil until saturated. Place the cloth over the affected area and cover with a couple sheets of wax paper. Apply a heating pad or hot water bottle over the area for 30-60 minutes. Remove pack and wipe off excess oil. Place the castor oil pack in a glass jar or container for reuse later on.

Hair Growth Treatment - Castor oil contains ricinoleic acid, which can help stimulate blood flow to the scalp and nourish hair follicles, promoting growth. Mix 3 tablespoons of organic castor oil, with 1 tablespoon of jojoba oil, and 1 tablespoon of coconut oil in a dark glass dropper bottle. Part hair and use dropper to apply mixture directly to the scalp. Massage scalp for 10 minutes to stimulate blood circulation. Leave in for at least 30 minutes, or overnight for deeper penetration. Wash hair as usual.

Skin Moisturizer - Castor oil’s emollient properties make it an effective moisturizer for dry skin. It can help lock in hydration, fade sun spots and improve skin texture. For use on face, apply a few drops of organic castor oil to fingertips. Gently massage into skin using a circular motion. Allow it to absorb for a few minutes before applying makeup or other products.

Eye Floaters (applied topically) - Although usually harmless, eye floaters - those tiny specks or clouds that drift across our vision - can be bothersome. Before going to bed, apply a tiny bit of organic, cold-pressed, hexane-free castor oil to fingertip and gently rub it onto eyelids. The skin will absorb the oil overnight and after only a few applications, you’ll begin to notice a significant improvement.

What And Where To Buy

Castor oil can be purchased from online retailers or at local health food or specialty stores. When contemplating which brand is the best, always opt for:

  • Organic - Organic castor oil typically contains higher levels of essential fatty acids, including ricinoleic acid, which is known for its anti-inflammatory properties. The absence of pesticides and synthetic fertilizers in the cultivation of organic castor beans contributes to its purer nutrient-rich value.

  • Cold-pressed - Produced by using natural, hydraulic or manual pressing to extract oil from the castor seeds. This method does not use any heat, chemicals or additives, which ensures that the nutrient content is maintained.

  • Hexane-free - Hexane is a solvent commonly used in the extraction process of oils and seeds. It is a petroleum based chemical that helps extract oils more quickly. However, there is growing concern about the potential health risks. Hexane can leave trace amounts of toxic residue in the final product.

  • Packaged in a dark glass bottle - Unlike plastic containers, glass doesn’t contain chemicals that can leach into the oil, ensuring the castor oil remains pure and uncontaminated. Exposure to light, air and contaminants can degrade the oil’s quality and potency.

Again, when buying castor oil, make sure to choose high-quality, organic, cold-pressed and hexane-free options for best results.

Happy healing! 💕
